Term 2 has seen a change of normal routine in the library. Mrs Nolan reduced her teaching load so that our levelled reading book sets could be barcoded and their data entered on our library software. This will ensure easy and equitable access to these valuable resources for all classes.
Both Prep classes have been working with Mrs. Nolan using the Oracy literacy program that develops language using specific Junior Fiction books. We explored rhyme, syllables, repetition and comprehension. These sessions also encourage a love of literature.
Year 2 and 2/3 classes worked on developing their narrative stories through planning a Dreamtime story. Mrs. Nolan modelled using a mindmap as a strategy for this process. Students then planned their own stories and developed them in class.
Mr Hand’s Year 5 class accessed the library to work on note making skills. This valuable skill will assist the students throughout their school years and beyond. Year 6 incorporated literacy rotation groups in the library with listening comprehension. Groups of six students listened to Paul Jennings’ ‘Sucked In’ on listening posts and then discussed the story and answered comprehension questions. All students thought this was a great way to listen to stories because music, sound effects and different voices were used.
Our parent volunteers were incredibly helpful again this term; we really appreciate any help we can get. Please just drop in if you have some free time, training will be provided if necessary. Shelving, covering, sorting, and putting up displays are just a few areas where help is needed.
Volunteer Year 6 & 7 students are our amazing Library Monitors. They come in at first lunch break and assist with shelving Junior Fiction, playing with younger students, entertaining with puppet plays, tidying shelves, and generally being very helpful. Well done to all who help our school in this way.
Coming up in Term 3, Book Week takes place in the last week of August. This year’s theme is “Book Safari” which sounds like lots of fun already. Book Week is a celebration of Australian authors and illustrators. Many fun and exciting activities take place in this week, the most popular being our parade. Students are asked to dress up as a book character or in the theme and parade in their class group. A very popular tradition at our school! Our school has been entered in the Children’s Book Council’s Junior Judges project. We will be examining each of the short listed books and judging them ourselves. It will be interesting to see how our winners compare with the CBCA judges’ decisions.
